Condo In Moab Is Ready For Spring

Things are looking good at condo in Moab and the first visitors of the season will be arriving soon.  Springtime is extremely popular for visiting Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.  The sun is still at a relatively low angle in the sky which makes for spectacular colors in the red rock scenery.  Air temperatures are moderate and conducive to hiking, mountain biking and all types of outdoor activities.

There are just a handful of open dates in April.  Availability at the condo in Moab is slightly better in May and June although both months are booking quickly.  If you don’t mind the warmer temperatures in the summertime both national parks tend to be less crowded in July and August.  Visitors coming that time of year need to be prepared and  bring lots of water, sunscreen and pace themselves when hiking or mountain biking.

As we begin the month of March virtually all of the shops and restaurants in Moab are back in full swing.  Many local business owners shut down for a couple of months in the wintertime and take a breather before the onslaught of Spring time visitors.  This little town of approximately 5000 year-round residents sees 2 million visitors during the course of the year.  When you figure that the vast majority of those visitors come during the busiest 30 weeks it means roughly 60,000 people passing through town each week.

It’s a good idea to make dinner reservations from March through June and again from September through October.  Some of the most popular restaurants can get fully booked up.  City Market is best avoided between 4 PM and 7 PM if at all possible.  We recommend doing your grocery shopping early in the morning; before 8:30 AM is best.  You’ll find a discount card for City Market at the condo in Moab attached to one set of keys.  Make sure to bring it with you and enjoy substantial savings at the store.

Condo In Moab Booking Update 2/21/19

Reservations are looking good for the condo in Moab in 2019. April and may have only a handful of dates available. But March and June are only about 50% reserved so there are still some openings at this time. There is a perpetual shortage of lodging in Moab. As a result, it behooves visitors to make reservations as far in advance as possible.

What if the condo in Moab is reserved for your preferred dates? My property manager has several other units in the same complex that are vacation rentals. Makenna’s maintains very high standards for all of their properties. Over the years guests have generally been quite satisfied with the accommodations at Rim Village Vistas.

One of the nice things about the location of the condo in Moab is that it provides easy access to Hwy 191. In about 5 minutes you can get to the center of town where you’ll find all of the shops and restaurants. If you turn south on Highway 191 it will take you towards the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park. This southern part of the park gets fewer visitors and offers dramatic scenery of eroded rocky spires and red rock canyons.

If you are approaching the condo in Moab from the South along Highway 191 you will likely pass through the quaint little town of Blanding. They have a great visitor center! I highly recommend that you stop by to check out the informative displays.

One of the most spectacular places to visit in southeastern Utah is Monument Valley. It takes about 2.5 hours to drive from the condo in Moab down to this stunning part of Navajo Nation. Many visitors just do the 17 mile drive through the monuments on a bumpy and dusty dirt road. However, there is one hiking trail a little bit over 3 miles in length that you can do on your own. All other hikes or any travel off the 17 mile drive will require you to get a local Navajo guide.

If you are looking for accommodations near Monument Valley I recommend Goulding’s Lodge. The staff is very friendly and a lot of the rooms have great views. It’s a straight drive for approximately 4 miles to get to from the hotel to the entrance kiosk. Another option inside Monument Valley is the View Hotel. It’s a bit pricey but the views will knock your socks off especially at sunset.

Condo in Moab Update 2/14/19

It looks like spring is going to be a busy time for the condo in Moab. Reservations continue to pour in and there are only about a dozen days still available in total for April and May.

We are even starting to see bookings for the upcoming busy autumn season in September and October. Since Moab gets over 2 million visitors each year it definitely helps to plan ahead especially when it comes to making lodging reservations.

At the condo in Moab we have been getting everything spiffed up for the next incoming guests. This is actually a very new property with construction completed in October 2017. The complex continues to grow with some new two-bedroom units under construction.

It’s been an unusually stormy winter in southeastern Utah. The winds from the latest storm have been absolutely ferocious. While the scenery is still beautiful this time of year weather conditions are not conducive at the moment for most outdoor activities. However, with the arrival of spring just a few weeks away things will warm up and both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks will be very inviting.

One of the most interesting sights to see in this part of the world is Dead Horse Point State Park. This place offers dramatic scenery very similar to what you would find in Canyonlands National Park. Since it’s a state park that is not well known to most visitors it gets a lot less traffic and is very enjoyable.

The hiking trail along the rim near Dead Horse Point is virtually level and easy-to-follow. You’ll get to see spectacular views of the Canyonlands and red rock scenery. At the end of the road is a large parking area with picnic tables some of which are sheltered.

If you are visiting the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands you’ll drive right past the entrance to Dead Horse Point State Park. It is definitely worth the short detour to see this unique piece of land with a somewhat infamous history. The drive door to door from the condo in Moab is approximately 45 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions.

Winter at the Condo in Moab

We are in the middle of winter at the condo in Moab.  It has been unusually chilly this year.  The surrounding area has seen a bit more snow than usual.  Our snow removal guys who generally get very little work in this part of the world have been busier than normal.

It’s nice that the federal government shutdown has ended temporarily.  This has allowed both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks to reopen.  Please be cautious this time of year as roads can be slippery especially in shady spots.

Most of the hiking trails have some snow and ice on them.  We recommend that in addition to wearing sturdy hiking boots you consider Ice Trekkers or Yaktrax.  We prefer the Ice Trekkers since they employ a solid stainless steel diamond shaped material.  The Ice Trekkers device seems to grip really well based on our experience.  While the Yaktrax tend to be a bit less expensive, they don’t seem to be as rugged or last as long as the Ice Trekkers.

When you are planning a trip to the condo in Moab it is very important to take into account the time of year you are visiting.  The temperature difference can be close to 100° from winter to summer.  Also, the desert cools off very quickly at night all year-round.  So, it’s important to bring clothes that you can wear in layers.  We suggest you bring 2 different sets of gloves.  One thin pair for daytime walks and a pair of ski gloves for cold weather or nighttime adventures from autumn to spring.

There is plenty of closet space at the condo in Moab.  You don’t need to worry about where to put everything as the master suite alone has 3 nice sized closets.  Each of the other guest bedrooms has a good size closet.  Plus, the garage is extra big and provides plenty of room for 2 large vehicles plus mountain bikes and other recreational gear.

Condo in Moab Bookings Continue on a Good Pace

It looks like 2019 is going to be a good year for the condo in Moab. Located just 5 minutes south of downtown you have easy access to everything in red rock country.

We have seen several new bookings in the past week. As of this writing the only open dates from March 15 to June 7 are as follows:

April 3, April 21 – 24, May 14 – 16, May 20 – 25, June 1 – 3

Autumn is a great time to visit Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. If you visit the area during fall you’ll find more pleasant temperatures than in mid-summer. Water levels will have dropped from their spring time highs making some stretches on the rivers safer for rafting (or maybe too tame in some cases).

The condo in Moab already has a couple of reservations in September and October. So it’s advisable to book ahead if you want the best selection of dates to fit your vacation schedule. The lower angle of the sun makes for excellent photos at sunrise and sunset. And you won’t have to get up super early for sunrise like you would if you came to visit in May or June.

Another good thing about visiting in autumn is that you won’t have to contend with the cold weather and snow that will arrive in December. The current winter has brought some good snow storms and can have an impact on facilities, services, roads and other things that could impact your visit.

Arches has a special winter update page that is worth visiting if you are planning a trip before the middle of March.

No matter what time of year that you stay at the condo in Moab it’s always good to plan ahead. There is still some concern that we could see another Federal government shutdown in mid-February. This would most certainly affect operations at both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

Moab Condo Upgrades

The condo in Moab is undergoing a few upgrades along with some annual maintenance.  Good news, the Federal shutdown is temporarily over. We anticipate that Arches and Canyonlands National Parks will be back in action with full services.  However, we urge caution this time of year as the roads can be icy and slippery in places.

The improvements being done at the condo in Moab include new light fixtures in the bathrooms along with new sheets and towels.  The entire property is given a deep cleaning and all of the appliances are tested to make sure everything is ready for the next set of incoming visitors.

The calendar is already heavily booked from March 20 until late May.  We even have reservations for guests arriving in June.  If you are planning a trip to any of the national parks in Utah now is a great time to make reservations before everything gets filled up.  During the busiest seasons the entire town of Moab sells out consistently and very often the nearest accommodations are found in Green River about 1 hour away.

If our condo in Moab is booked, you can always visit the website for our property manager to see if they have other places available.  They handle a lot of condos in the Rim Village Vista complex.  So, you would likely find a similar floor plan and good quality furnishings throughout.

No matter what time of year you visit Moab and the desert, be sure to keep at least one or 2 gallons of water in your car.  Water sources are few and far between in this part of the world.  You would hate to have a flat tire or some other problem that causes your vehicle to be disabled and get stuck in the desert without water.  Many of the most scenic spots are down a lonely dirt road where you might not see anyone for hours or even days.  Always better to err on the side of caution and have water, food and some warm clothing in case you need to wait out a tough situation.

Condo in Moab in January

It’s a quiet time of year for the condo in Moab. Both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are hidden in snow and closed due to the Federal government shutdown. So, things in Moab are even quieter than usual for this time of year.

From December thru late February many stores and restaurants are closed for the winter season. Proprietors often depart for their own vacation home someplace warm to enjoy the winter months. Although there are a few who own places in the mountains near ski resorts where they spend winter enjoying the slopes.

If you come to Moab this time of year be prepared to find a limited selection of stores and restaurants from which to choose. Fortunately, City Market and the Village Market remain in full swing so you can always buy all the groceries you need.

The condo in Moab has a really nice kitchen with all of the appliances and conveniences one could expect. You’ll find a nice variety of spices so you can cook up your favorite dinners. The gas range is perfect for even the most discriminating chef. And you’ve got a large supply of utensils, glasses, dishes, etc. so you won’t worry about running out of things on a busy day.

This year bookings are very strong and most of April and May have already been reserved. These 2 months are always very popular due to the beautiful weather, long days and water levels in the rivers and creeks. Another very busy time is during September and October when summer temperatures drop to a more pleasant level. If you do stay at the condo in Moab during the summertime you’ll find fewer crowds along with hot, sunny days (and the occasional thunderstorm).

Condo in Moab Open, National Parks Closed

It’s a bit lonely at the condo in Moab this week. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are closed due to snowfall and the Federal government shutdown. A couple of good sized snow storms rolled through in the past few weeks. This lead to Arches closing 1st and then Canyonlands (beyond the Visitor Center).

You can still get to Dead Horse Point State Park since you’re on a state highway all the way to the entrance. It features dramatic scenery similar to what you’d see in Canyonlands. There is a wonderful hike along the rim that takes you to both sides of “The Neck”.

While Dead Horse Point has a morbid history, the story is fascinating and the views of the red rock scenery are worth seeing. There are lots of nice spots to picnic along the way, although it can be a bit chilly this time of year.

The legend of Dead Horse Point is based on the story from around the end of the 19th century. This narrow neck of land was used as a corral for wild horses that would roam along the top of the mesa. Cowboys would herd the mustangs across the narrow neck of land and out to the point. This narrow neck of land was then blocked off with tree branches and brush. Unfortunately, in one instance (for reasons that will never be known), horses were unattended and blocked in at the point. Eventually, they died of thirst within view of the Colorado River 2,000 feet below.

We recommend that you allow at least 3 to 4 hours to walk along the rim trail and take in the incredible vistas. You can’t get lost, at any point in time you are no more than 1/4 mile from the paved park road.

There is not a lot of shade along the route since you are on a neck of land stretching out into the canyon. Make sure you bring at least 1 to 2 quarts of water per person and wear a hat and sunscreen. The wind can kick up at anytime so don’t lose your hat!

Our condo in Moab at Rim Vista Village makes a great jumping off point for visiting both the state and national parks. It’s located in a quiet spot close to the highway for easy access to all of the sights and activities in the Moab area.
