With scenery that rivals the Grand Canyon, you’ll find extraordinary views that are easy to reach by foot or car in Canyonlands National Park.  The gorgeous colors range from greys and browns to orange, purple, red and a thousand shades in between.  For a dramatic view of the contrasting colors make sure you visit Upheaval Dome which can be found in the Island In The Sky section of Canyonlands.

The park is divided into north and south sections that are easily accessible from Moab.  The northern and most popular section is called Island In The Sky. Situated at approximately 6000 feet up, this plateau overlooks some of the most spectacular canyon scenery anywhere in the world.  Driving north from Moab you’ll turn left onto the access road and then travel approximately 25 miles until you reach the visitor center.

The road is open all year ‘round except when there are major snow storms in winter.  Be sure to check the Canyonlands National Park website for up to the minute road and conditions info.

Here are some places to consider seeing when you visit Island In The Sky:

  • Viewpoint – Monitor and Merrimack
  • Stop at All Overlooks (Especially Green River and Grand View)
  • Mesa Arch
  • Grand View Point (Do the 2 mile hike round-trip)
  • Upheaval Dome
  • Shafer Canyon Overlook

4WD adventures are very popular in Canyonlands.  There are a number of companies in Moab who rent Jeeps, ATVs and other types of 4WD vehicles. Terrain ranges from gentle dirt roads to 40 degree climbs and drops with expert off road skills required for some areas of the park.  Whether you are seeking a casual ride on paved roads or extreme 4WD terrain, Canyonlands has you covered.
